Academics
Curriculum
At St. Nicholas William Spyropoulos, we provide an environment where we encourage our children to be inquisitive, to be enthusiastic about their work, and ultimately to learn to work together with their classmates in a meaningful way. We value and develop a love for learning from the early grades. We encourage our students to be eager for knowledge and to become independent thinkers. Our administrators get to know each child by name, have a working knowledge of the progress each child is making in their studies, and are aware of how each child is maturing socially and emotionally.
We follow a rigorous academic curriculum throughout all the grades in our St. Nicholas William Spyropoulos School. Our new Computer Room is a state of the art facility for our children in grades K-8, and technology is incorporated in all of our classes. In grades 3, 4, and 5, we offer an accelerated program in math and an honors program in reading. Our junior high school continues to build upon the foundation began in the elementary grades. The junior high school is departmentalized, and the children change classes for all subjects. We have an accelerated math and science program in grades 6, 7, and 8. In our accelerated math and science programs, the students are taught one year above grade level.
Our eighth graders in accelerated math are eligible to take the Algebra 1 Common Core NYS Regents. For the past number of years, our school average Regents scores in math range between 85% and 90%. In science, we offer two Regents classes. We prepare our students to take the Earth Science NYS Regents in seventh grade and the Living Environment NYS Regents in the eighth grade. Our students score exceptionally well on both science Regents courses. Students in all levels of Greek Language take the Comprehensive Examination in Modern Greek. Throughout the years we consistently have students who score a perfect 100%. In grades 6, 7, and 8, our children have the opportunity to be recognized for their hard work, effort, and character by being placed on Honor Roll List, Principal’s List, or Principal’s with Honors List.
Extracurricular Activities
We have a rich extracurricular activities program that addresses the interests and needs of all our students. The activities include sports, academic enrichment, Greek Dance, Byzantine Choir, Debate, and many more. The William Spyropoulos School believes in a well-rounded student who has a strong sense of identity. For a detailed list of our extracurricular activities and enrollment form, please click here.
Team
The William Spyropoulos School has a girls’ and boys’ basketball team called the Hawks. The team consists of seniors. This team competes with teams from other Greek Orthodox Parochial Schools with weekly games after school. Through these games, students learn sportsmanship and teamwork.
Assemblies
Our school has many assemblies throughout the year during which our students celebrate and commemorate our Greek American history and culture. These assemblies instill in our students a pride for their faith and their dual ethnicity. Our assemblies include celebrations for “OXI” Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, our American Heritage, and the 25th of March. In addition, our most popular assembly entitled A Musical Anthology is a celebration of the history of music and is performed by our Choir.
High School Opportunities
We take the preparation for High School very seriously and make every effort to ensure that the application process is as easy as possible for students and parents. In order to achieve this, we do the following:
- Conduct meetings with all 8th grade students and parents to inform them of the two application processes (private and public), high school programs, auditions, open houses, criteria for selection, etc.
- Offer individual meetings with each student and their parents to discuss the child’s case and high school choices.
- Host representatives from local high schools.
- Coordinate group visits to local high schools.
